Facebook News Feed Changes

Facebook has made some recent changes to how they handle your news feed. Technology is ever changing and it seems that you can just never keep up. It's like a game of cat and mouse. Once you get comfortable with something it changes!

So you have worked hard to find and add old friends that you haven't heard from in years or maybe you have found new friends with common interest on Facebook and suddenly you don't see any activity from them in your new feed.

The reason is because Facebook has changed the default for your news feed. I'm not sure when this change happened, but now the default is for you to only get in your feed, items from friends whom you have recently interacted with. That means that all of those friends that you have found, you could quickly forget about again because you are not seeing any activity from them.

Changing your Facebook news feed back

Fortunately, this is a easy problem to remedy. To change your news feed back to the way that it originally was all you have to do is to log into your Facebook account and click the HOME button first. There, at the top of the page you will see an option that says MOST RECENT. Click on MOST RECENT and you will see EDIT OPTIONS... Click on EDIT OPTIONS and you will see something in bold at the top that says: Show posts from:

This is where you want the option reset. It will be defaulted to 'Friends and pages you interact with most'. You can change it here back to 'All of your friends and pages'. Then you will once again get news from all of your friends.

On the other hand...

There is always two side to every story. What about those friends that you really didn't want to friend in the first place. You don't want to unfriend them because that may hurt their feelings and let them know that you truly don't want to be Facebook friends with any way. Well, this is your saving grace. The new default for the Facebook feed will leave them out of your status updates and you out of theirs if you don't communicate directly with them.

Since, you are trying to find an easy way to get out of this unwanted relationship, it's a good change that you won't. So in this case you might want to thank Facebook for making these changes to their news feed and helping you out.

Forex Market News - Overseas Debit Cards

While many who trade within the forex market choose to use international debit cards and credit cards, international banks are beginning to capitalize on the market involved with these convenient cards. Asia Commercial Joint Stock bank plans on collecting a flat fee per transaction after the rate difference.

What this means for you is money coming out of your pocket whenever you make a trade.

Forex debit cards are a great choice for those who trade heavily in the forex market, as they allow traders to swiftly transfer cash from account to account without any major wiring fees. While the new fees imposed by banks are cracking down on the forex bubble, cards are still the best way to transfer currencies between traders, and cuts back drastically on costs.

Traders beware, however. Check around to make sure you are getting the best rates available. Some banks offer lower fees and so some careful shopping will go a long way in saving your hard earned cash from being eaten up by bank fees. For instance, Sacombank only charges a 2.1 percent fee on the difference on all types of international credit cards and debit cards. Traders can find a bank and a debit or credit card that can work for their accounts and trades.

International debit cards are a great way to speed up your trades and transactions, and transfer money automatically. See your forex account manager today for more information and find out how you can take advantage of this inexpensive way to trade and transfer foreign currencies.

Current Geology News

Although it is easy to get caught up in our own little worlds, with our jobs, our own stresses, it's best to sometimes take a few moments to look at what's going on with the rest of the world. Researching current geology news is a good way to keep abreast of these occurrences.

On October 6th, a sizeable (few meters) asteroid was discovered before entering the earth's atmosphere. Generally, asteroids this large enter the earth's atmosphere once every few months, but this was the very first time the asteroid had been discovered prior to impact. Colliding with the atmosphere above Sudan, Africa, it entered at a 19-degree angle and was expected to look like a "fireball." Due to its size, it was not supposed to leave any sizable fragments behind.

On October 5th, a 6.6 magnitude earthquake struck Karakul, Tajikistan, where at least 72 people were killed. Dozens of buildings were destroyed. This quake was also felt in areas in China, Pakistan and Uzbekistan.

Still more current geology news, a new technique using diamond dust may soon be used to help chemotherapy patients. The actual patch looks a bit like saran wrap but is embedded with tiny bits of diamonds that would be able to release drugs over a period of time. This would considerably limit the exposure to the chemotherapy drugs thereby lessening the side effects. Research has confirmed these "nanodrugs" as they're called do not cause inflammation within the body's cells.

Oil found (back in the 1980's) off the Atlantic coastline is not at this time being tapped. Why not? When America gets 60% of its oil from other countries (most of whom despise America) why then is America not getting oil from off the coastline of Virginia? It was estimated in the 1980's that there is at least a 6-month supply of oil there. Because of the long and drawn out permit process, drilling would not start there for at least another decade. This drilling would create new jobs as well as allow America to become stronger and less dependent on foreign nations.

Sure, salt makes us thirsty. And the existence of excess salt in the Great Salt Lake is apparently drying it up. The lake is nearing near record-low levels, lowest since the 1960's, the experts say. It's at least six feet below normal levels. The Lake is a closed entity, no water feeds it, and its levels are therefore dependent on many other factors, rates of evaporation, soil moisture, rain. Low lake levels means a less ideal environment for both boaters and for fisherman, especially those catching brine shrimp.

And more in current geology news, there was a landslide on Mars. According to the Mars Odyssey Mission THEMIS (Thermal Emission Imaging System), it captured a landslide inside an as of yet unnamed crater in Terra Cimmeria.

But I don't think the Spiess family is too worried about the landslide on Mars when a landslide in their backyard is about to take their home away. Due to heavy rains, the Spiess family have already lost half of their backyard. In mid September, half of their backyard fell away in just seven hours. They have discovered cracks throughout the foundation of the house, and it is now even pitching the driveway. Many insurance companies, it is reported, do not cover damages caused by earth movement.

ABC World News Tonight - Leading the Network News Pack

The number one six-o'clock news program is now on ABC with Charlie Gibson. There were many great news anchors: Walter Cronkite, Peter Jennings, Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Tom Brokaw (to name the ones that come to my mind). And I think Charlie Gibson will be added to these names. He brings the most humanly connected broadcast that is possible on TV. You feel as if he's one of the viewers, with the luck of actually being there among the newsmakers. At first it was "Charles," but he was just too down-to-earth to not be "Charlie."

His start on GOOD MORNING AMERICA in 1987 brought a relaxed atmosphere that came with him to the news. This has never diminished the seriousness of the broadcast. Charlie Gibson travels the country and the world to give us the best perspective of events. In fact, I've often wondered when he sleeps considering the many hours he's on the air. His stamina is amazing!

The best debate with all the candidates this year was the one Mr. Gibson moderated. After the Republican debate and before the Democratic one, all the contenders were on the stage together. His hope seemed to let the viewers see that these are just people that happen to be in the national spotlight.

People who are a part of the broadcast appear quite comfortable with Charlie. I have watched interviews where he did make the person squirm with hard questions, but only because he or she deserved to. There's only one thing I wish he would change. His closing is, "I hope you had a good day, and we hope you have a good night." That is so terribly corny, even for a Charlie.

Fashion News - What's Trendy in 2008?

A fashion conscious person never misses the fashion trends for the year to come. If you are already reading this article, this means that you are interested in what to wear in 2008. Do you like the fashion of the fifties? Well, you should, because it will come back in 2008 and that entire craze will be in style again. As a matter of fact, this trend of the 50s comeback has already started before 2008, so you are at least a bit familiar with the concept.

First things first: the spring summer fashion for 2008 will contain a lot of interesting models that clearly reminds us of the 50s. Baggy dresses below the knee for day wear or vaporous dresses for evening that will make the fashion in 2008. The trousers will be in fashion as well, and mini trousers may be worn as well. Capri trousers are still in style and may be worn with extra large sweaters. However, there is a trend that will mix styles, so sporty style will mix with the chic and there will be an ethno mix, which will result in some interesting combinations. The urban style will thus be a functional wardrobe with sporty details. This highly unlikely combination that comes as a surprise is like a breathe of fresh air.

The colors that are dominant for the style for 2008's spring and summer are the grey, black, white plus yellow. This color is a problematic color that does not suit with everything, so it must be worn with great care. However, next year, dare to wear yellow and see how it looks. The prints on the dresses or blouses can be floral, but they will become more abstract and even geometric or will totally lack. So uni is back in style. The accessories will match the outfit. The oversized bags are still in style, while the super huge earrings and necklaces will compliment the overall clothing.

The jewels may be made of plastic or more natural materials such as wood or even clay. These can be ethno influenced and create a great effect on the entire apparel, making the body look small and giving an interesting perspective. So, are you ready for spring and the summer of 2008? Get your wardrobe ready for this year's style and buy some great new trendy apparel online or in the stores that you usually visit. Now you know what to hunt for, just go and get them.

How Technology Has Changed The News

The way people follow the news has undergone major changes over the years. The technologies that allow us to communicate and get information are constantly being improved upon. For example, moveable type was an improvement upon older printing methods, the telephone was an improvement on the telegraph, and television was an improvement on the radio.

The trend all along has been toward a more global atmosphere. However, no technology has accomplished this as completely as the Internet.

A couple of hundred years ago, most newspapers focused on local news; any foreign news big enough to make the papers was often delayed a little, to account for slower methods of communication. Compare this to today, when you can read about something that happened halfway around the world, an hour or less after it occurred.

Until the telegraph was invented in the 1830s, there was simply no way to spread news quickly so local papers just reported local news. Even after the telegraph was invented, though, there were still limits on how quickly information could be relayed. A message had to be composed by the sender, sent in Morse code (which taps out each letter separately) by the telegraph operator, and interpreted and written down by the receiving telegraph operator who then had to find the recipient and deliver the message. Also, because telegraph messages were sent letter by letter, long messages (or lots of information) were inconvenient and expensive.

Printing also offered some hurdles for news reporting. Prior to 1800, printing presses were manually operated, which put severe limits on how many pages could be printed in an hour. Throughout the 19th century, the advent of steam-powered printing presses and other innovations enabled printers to more than quadruple the number of pages they could print in an hour.

As a result, newspapers were widely available by the mid to late1800s. More people learned to read, and more people read the news than ever before.

In the early 20th century, the arrival of the radio changed the nature of news forever. By the 1910s, radio stations have started broadcasting news and talk. Although the development of radio news programs was slowed somewhat by World War I, it quickly made up for lost time, and by the 1930s the newspapers had come to fear the competition. And for good reason: The radio enabled listeners to get the news without delay and without paying for it - two main features of print newspapers.

A couple of decades later, television presented a new way to get the news: The first big televised news program, "Hear It Now," started showing in 1951. This progressed to the way we know things now: a series of morning and evening news programs, making it easier than ever for people to find out what is happening in their communities and around the world.

The latter phrase "around the world" is key. Radio and TV made it possible for people to hear foreign news stories without much of a delay. For the first time in the history of the world, ordinary people could stay up on what was happening in foreign countries without having to wait for the next day's paper or spend money on it.

Innovations in printing and communication brought about major changes to how people got the news in the 19th century. Radio and TV created even bigger changes in the 20th century. But nothing can compare to the impact the Internet has made on the way we get the news.

The Internet has all of the same features radio and TV offered. It is immediate, free, long reaching, but even more so. For instance, the Internet doesn't have to wait for a regularly scheduled news program. Articles posted on a news website are available instantly to people across the globe. Also, while some news sites have experimented with paid subscriptions, most news is available for free. Finally, the long reach of the Internet has brought about concepts such as globalization, the idea that all the people in the world are interconnected, part of a single (albeit very large) community.

The Internet has done other things for the news, as well. In some ways, it has restored the idea of the newspaper, since we once again read news stories. We also deal with less in-your-face advertising: Both newspapers and the Internet allow you the option of not looking at the advertisements, whereas the radio and television force you to sit through scheduled commercials.

However, the Internet is also constantly advancing, which means the face of virtual news is always changing too. Videos have become popular on the Internet, so many news websites are starting to use video clips to complement, and sometimes even replace, written stories. Other sites, such as NPR, offer the option to play recordings of radio shows that have already aired.

The point is that technology is constantly changing the way we get the news. Although the Internet has made a tremendous impact on the news industry, it's safe to assume it's not over yet. There are always more changes and improvements that can take place.

Communicating Bad News

Delivering bad news, whether communicating up, down, or across the organization, is a difficult task. Two questions often come to mind on this dilemma:

(1) How to structure the bad news message and

(2) How to communicate the bad news.

How to Structure the Bad news Message

Answer the tough questions up front. The best way to structure a bad news message is to answer the tough questions up front. For example, if a manager must announce layoffs, he should answer his employees' specific questions first rather than beat around the bush. The employees' questions will likely be: How does this affect me? What is my severance package? When will this take place?

Be direct. Be honest, but be sensitive. Avoid language that attempts to evade responsibility or obscure the issue. In addition, speak in the active voice to show that you accept accountability. For example: "I have reviewed your request for a marketing assistant, but unfortunately I can't squeeze any more out of the budget this year."

Use clear language. Too often, unclear statements result in misunderstandings and misinterpretations. Rehearse what you need to say beforehand to prevent making any misleading or vague statements. Use straightforward sentences and language to convey the bad news.

Focus on what can be done. In the midst of a crisis, we often react negatively to the things we cannot control. Or we express what cannot be done. In a bad-news message, focus on the positive, on what can be done. For example, if talking with a customer about a delayed shipment, replace the negative language, "We cannot possibly fill your order by June 19," with positive language, "We will be able to fill your order by June 30."

How to Deliver the Bad News Message

Avoid e-mail. If you've ever opened an e-mail containing bad news, you may have sensed a lack of respect and empathy, if not blatant passive-aggression. No doubt, e-mail is a highly impersonal method of communicating bad news. Most people can better interpret and accept the bad news message when it is delivered in person.

Use one-to-one dialogue. Face-to-face communication allows for gestures and body language to help in conveying the tone and genuine expression of regret and concern. It also allows for interaction and feedback, and possibly greater acceptance of the bad news. If face-to-face interaction is not available, use the phone. Since the person you are talking to cannot read your body language or see your facial expressions, it is critical that you keep your voice energetic and your tone positive.

Listen. The recipients of the bad news will likely have questions and concerns. Show them that you understand their feelings by focusing on what they're saying. Take notes, ask clarifying questions, and paraphrase their concerns. For example, say, "I hear you. I know this isn't easy to accept."

Be calm and composed. Pay close attention to your behavior and attitude when under stress. It is easy to become consumed with the reactions of others and resort to defensive behaviors. Maintain control and self-monitor your feelings, words, tone of voice, and body language.

Can You Copyright News Headlines?

This article addresses the law relating to copyright in news headlines and explores the case law relating to whether media publishers can protect their headlines as original literary works.

Media companies have tried to claim copyright protection over newspaper headlines reproduced on the internet. News publishers have claimed that news headlines qualify for copyright protection as original literary works under copyright legislation. As early as 1918 in the case of International News Service v Associated Press 248 U.S. 215 the US Supreme Court has held that there can be no copyright in facts or 'news of the day'.

However unlike in Commonwealth countries like Australia where there is no recognition of a tort of misappropriation the United States recognises a doctrine of misappropriation of hot news. This tort has enabled media publishers and other organisations to gain the right to protect other entities from publishing certain 'facts' or data, including news and other time-sensitive information during a certain window period to enable the organisation which has invested in gathering the data can recoup their investment. There are a number of criteria which must be satisfied to prevail in an action of hot news misappropriation

As stated above, Commonwealth Courts have rejected a tort of unfair competition as framed in the United States and have decided such cases solely on the basis of copyright law. Courts have been reluctant to afford literary copyright to titles, characters and news headlines. However newspaper publishers have only recently brought legal action in Australia for copyright infringement in their headlines and portions of their articles on the basis that the reproduction or abstracting of headlines is equivalent to theft of their content. Newspaper publishers have tried to obtain copyright protection in their headlines as discrete original literary works under copyright legislation.

For copyright protection to exist a literary work must exist and not every piece of writing or printing will constitute a literary work within the meaning of the law.

Typically, single words, short phrases, advertising slogans, characters and news headlines have been refused copyright protection even where they have been invented or newly coined by an author. The courts have given different reasons for denying copyright protection to such works. One reason offered by the Courts is that the 'works' are too trivial or not substantial enough to qualify for copyright protection. The case of Exxon Corporation v Exxon Insurance Consultants Ltd (1981) 3 All ER 241 is a leading English precedent where copyright was refused for the word Exxon as an original literary work.

Exxon argued it enjoyed copyright in the word Exxon having invested time and energy in employing linguists to invent the word, contending that the actual size of the literary work doesn't preclude a work from acquiring copyright protection. The court found that the work was too short or slight to amount to a copyright work.

The Court also stated that although the word was invented and original it had no particular meaning, comparing it with the word 'Jabberwocky' used for Lewis Carroll's famous poem. US case law has only recognised limited intellectual property rights in invented names or fictional characters in exceptional cases. There is no modern English or Australian case which has recognised that titles, phrases, song and book titles should be granted copyright protection.

Publishers asserting copyright in headlines contend that compiling and arresting headlines involves a high degree of novelty and creativity, and that headlines should qualify as original literary works. To be a literary work, a work has to convey pleasure or afford enjoyment or instruction. A literary work must also be original, and to satisfy the test of originality it must be original not just in the sense of originating from an identifiable author rather than copied, but also original in the particular form of expression in which an author conveys ideas or information. This is because copyright is not meant to protect facts or ideas.

The question whether copyright can subsist in newspaper headlines was discussed briefly by a Judge in a Scottish case called Shetland Times Ltd v Wills [1997] FSH 604. The Judge didn't arrive at a final conclusion as to whether a newspaper headline can be a literary work, but expressed reservations about granting copyright to headlines, especially where they only provide a brief indication of the subject matter of the items they refer to in an article.

Newspaper headlines are similar in nature to titles of a book or other works and titles, slogans and short phrases which have been refused copyright protection. In the case of IceTV Pty Ltd v Nine Network Australia Pty Ltd [2009] HCA 14, the High Court held that no copyright can subsist in a programme title alone. The Courts have based their reasons for refusing copyright protection to such works both of the basis that they are too short (see Francis Day & Hunter Ltd v Twentieth Century Fox Corp Ltd (194) AC 112) or alternatively that titles of newspapers, songs, magazines, books, single words and advertising slogans lack sufficient originality to attract copyright protection.

The title 'Opportunity Knocks' for a game show was refused protection, as was the title "The Man who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" for a song and "Splendid Misery" for a novel. Courts have also refused copyright protection for invented names such as Kojak and newspaper titles such as 'The Mirror'. Such titles and names may however be protected by other forms of intellectual property such as trademark law or the tort of passing off.

Whilst Courts have recognised that newspaper headlines may involve creative flair and be clever and engaging but represent little more than the fact or idea conveyed.

Fairfax Media Publications Pty Ltd v Reed International Books Australia Pty Ltd the Federal Court of Australia has ruled that newspaper headlines are not capable of copyright protection. Reed and collected and reproduced the news headlines and articles appearing in the Australian Financial Review on it's Abix subscription service. Fairfax alleged that by producing abstracts of the articles in their service Reed had infringed the copyright in a number of works, being the headlines as a separate literary work and in the headline and article together, as a 'combination work', all of the articles, headlines and bylines as a 'compilation' and also published edition copyright in each of the Australian Financial Review. The Court held that the headline was too trivial to be copyrightable and did not amount to a substantial part of the combination work so as to amount to infringement and the combination work didn't amount to a work of joint authorship.

The law in the United States is somewhat unsettled in relation to the rights of news aggreggators to engage in such activity due to the existence of the tort of unfair competition which is recognised in some US States.

The Court held that even had the use amounted to infringement it would have been excused by the defence of fair dealing.

Survival Strategy: Move from Fear to Faith by Getting to Know the Author and Finisher of Faith

As the sun goes down on your first day of entering into God's Dimension and Presence via prayer, remember how you began the day. Even though you still had periods of panic, you had the opportunity of being one with the Creator of Heaven and Earth.

God's economy is not limited nor does it lean only toward the powerful and influential. "The eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His" (2Chronicles 16:9)

The Author and Finisher of your faith is Jesus Christ, who not only holds that title but many others including God of All Grace and God of All Comfort.. As your day ends spend some time getting familiar with Him as your Comforter. It was in that role that our family was able to mentally survive the hardships of job losses and financial distress.

"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort who comforts us in all our tribulation that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God." (2nd Corinthians 1: 3,4)
